In February 2024, a gathering of experts, producers, and investors from the peanut sector took place in Itaju (SP) to delve into discussions regarding the outlook for the 2023/24 harvest and the innovations shaping Brazil's ascent to leadership in peanut oil exports.
Despite holding the 12th position in global peanut production in 2023, Brazil proudly maintains its top rank in peanut oil exports, having sold 86 thousand tons, as reported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Rodrigo Chitarelli, CEO of CRAS Brasil, emphasized Brazil's vast potential in the global market. Notably, he pointed out the increasing demand for Brazilian peanut oil in the Chinese market, representing 80% of the purchases. Chitarelli expressed optimism, stating that by expanding planting and enhancing grain quality, Brazil can naturally amplify its exports.
According to CONAB data, the 2023/24 peanut harvest in Brazil showcases a 15% increase in planted area and a 2% rise in production, despite challenges like irregular rains and high temperatures. Renata Martins Sampaio from the Institute of Agricultural Economics warned of climate challenges that might impact peanut production and exports.
Chitarelli, however, remains positive, stating that water stress won't hinder peanut oil production, anticipating a boost in harvest due to abundant rains forecasted for February.
The Itaju event underscored the pivotal role of seed varieties in the industry. The Campinas Agronomic Institute (IAC) and Embrapa showcased numerous new varieties and seed lines to enhance production quality and efficiency.
Ignácio Godoy, a researcher at IAC, stressed their commitment to production technology, aiming to offer varieties meeting the demands of mechanized production for both domestic and export markets.
Itaju (SP) continues to shine as the national capital of peanut oil, significantly contributing to Brazilian exports. With advancements in research and production, Brazil is poised to maintain its leading position in the global peanut oil market in 2024 and beyond.
