Low-Carbon Soybean: Embrapa Outlines Certification Guidelines for Producers

soybean

Technical guidelines to validate the low-carbon soybean certification methodology are becoming a reality. Embrapa and its partners have made progress on this initiative, aiming to enhance the sustainability of soybean production and diversify Brazil's export markets. Currently, around 75% of Brazil's soybean exports go to China, a dependency considered risky by market analysts.

The first version of the "Technical Guidelines for Low-Carbon Soybean Certification" has been published. This document outlines the principles for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in agricultural production systems across Brazil. Data collection is ongoing in over 60 agricultural areas in five major soybean-producing regions during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 growing seasons.

"The publication of these certification guidelines is crucial for scientifically validating the quantification methodology developed by Embrapa," explains Henrique Debiasi, coordinator of the Low-Carbon Soybean Program (PSBC) Steering Committee and researcher at Embrapa Soybean (PR).

Debiasi emphasizes that this is one of the largest sectoral initiatives in Brazil, aimed at adding value to soybeans produced in systems that reduce GHG emissions. The program estimates a potential emission reduction of approximately 30% in soybean production systems adopting the sustainable technologies outlined in the publication.
