Between June 18th and 20th, the 8th Meeting of the Zarc Embrapa Research and Development Network will be held at Embrapa Headquarters, in Brasília (DF). The event will bring together researchers, authorities, experts in agricultural policies, Proagro, credit and rural insurance and representatives of the productive sector to discuss climate risk management in Brazilian agriculture.

A growing concern for Brazilian agriculture has been the worsening of climate risks observed in recent decades, particularly in recent years. Among the consequences are the increase in the frequency and intensity of adverse events with increasing damage and losses to production systems, the progressive reduction of agricultural cultivation windows and sustainable production areas, difficulties in implementing the second harvest in several regions of the country, expansion of the semi-arid region and emergence of arid regions in Brazil.

Data from the Integrated Disaster Information System, from the Ministry of Integration, indicate that extreme weather events caused losses of R$443 billion in Brazil, between 2014 and 2023. The impacts on agricultural production systems represent 81% of this total, with an increase significant in recent years.

“The meeting aims to discuss the experience and vision of representatives from the productive sector, research, the insurance and rural credit sector, and agricultural policy makers and operators, on the management of climate risks in agriculture”, explains the researcher Eduardo Monteiro, from Embrapa, coordinator of the Zarc Network.
