Cashew nut production in Manhiça, Maputo province is under threat from an unidentified pest.

A pest of unknown origin is jeopardizing cashew nut production targets in the Manhiça district, Maputo province.

The disease manifests as the drying and falling of cashew tree flowers, hindering the development of the fruit. For instance, out of the planned approximately two hundred and twenty tons of chestnuts, only sixty were successfully produced, amounting to thirty percent.

Albino Saveca, the Representative of the Almond Institute in the Manhiça and Magude district, attributes this pest to climate change and assures that efforts are underway to address this issue.

The district of Manhiça in Maputo province, boasting four hundred producers, currently holds the position of the largest cashew nut producer. It has the capacity to generate seven million meticais from sales.
