The expansion of the planted area of the main crops linked to the climatic conditions faced by Brazil throughout 2023 favored the proliferation of pests and diseases in Brazilian agriculture, promoting a 10.5% increase in the area treated with agricultural pesticides in the year to date. This is what the consolidated result of research commissioned by the National Union of the Plant Defense Products Industry (Sindiveg) shows from Kynetec Brasil.
Regarding the total volume of agricultural pesticides used to control pests, diseases and weeds throughout the year, the use of a total of 1,424,588 tons was recorded, considering the number of applications required per situation. When compared to the previous year's amount (1,301,537 tons), the scenario is an increase of 9.5%. Of the total, 47% refer to herbicides, 22% to fungicides, 22% to insecticides, 1% to seed treatments and 8% to others. The sum used corresponds to 2.240 billion hectares treated, driven by the expansion of the cultivated area.
The research considers the methodology developed by Sindiveg, which projects data from the pesticide market in PAT (product per area treated). The concept highlights the volume effectively used by rural producers and the number of pesticide applications in the cultivated area. It is important to highlight that the 2023 numbers partially reflect the results of the last two harvests (2022/23 and 2023/24).
Thus, the PAT area divided by crops had soybeans as the protagonist, with 55% of the perimeter, followed by corn (18%), cotton (7%), pasture (6%), sugarcane (4%), wheat (3 %), others (2%) and fruit, coffee, citrus, beans and rice (1%). According to the survey, the market value for the use of pesticides also increased by 1.9%, from US$20,322 million in 2022 to US$20,706 billion in 2023, divided into soybeans (47%), corn ( 17%), sugarcane (10%), cotton (7%), pasture (4%), wheat and vegetables (3%), citrus, beans, rice and others (2%).
