The Committee on Constitution, Justice, and Citizenship (CCJC) approved the report by the president of the Parliamentary Agriculture Front (FPA), Congressman Pedro Lupion (PP-PR), on Bill 6903/2017, on Thursday (23). The proposal aims to promote the sustainable use of irrigation equipment in Brazilian agriculture and encourages the adoption of alternative energy sources, such as photovoltaic energy.
Lupion emphasizes the importance of considering the sustainability of irrigation mechanisms. “Many producers already use such technologies, particularly since the areas preserved by farmers account for more than 25% of Brazil's territory. No one has a greater interest in environmental preservation than Brazilian rural producers,” he said.
The congressman also highlights that Brazil has the most stringent environmental legislation in the world, the Forest Code. “We have restrictive legislation, which drives us to seek solutions that combine productivity with sustainable development and efficiency. Therefore, initiatives like this have our support.” According to the text, the government may prioritize support for irrigating family farmers and small farmers. It also stipulates that the National Irrigation Policy will prioritize research focused on promoting the sustainability of irrigated agriculture using renewable energy.
Renewable Energies
The proposal defines renewable energies as natural energy sources that can regenerate and lists sources such as photovoltaic solar energy, wind energy, biomass, biogas, and small hydroelectric plants. These options are chosen for being sustainable and having a lower environmental impact compared to non-renewable energy sources, such as fossil fuels.
