Piauí cooperative ships over 25 tons of cashew nuts to Italy for export.

The Central Cashew Growers Cooperatives in the State of Piauí recently completed the execution of their third export shipment on Thursday (7), involving 25.4 tons of cashew nuts destined for Italy. This successful transaction generated a total revenue of R$700,000.

This export operation is a collaborative effort between the Central Cashew Growers Cooperatives and Cooperativa Chico Mendes, an Italian cooperative focusing on solidarity and sustainable economics. The vacuum-packed cashew nuts are intended for commercial sale in Italy, according to Jocibel Bezerra, the CEO of the Central Cashew Growers Cooperatives.

Initiated in 2023, the contract concludes in March 2024 with this final delivery, divided into three shipments totaling 1,120 boxes of processed almonds, equivalent to 25.4 tons. Jocibel explains that the raw chestnut's weight is approximately 132 tons.

The deliveries were distributed, with the first comprising 200 boxes, the second 450, and the latest one consisting of 470 boxes, each holding a bag weighing 22.6 kg (50 pounds).

The processing involves cutting, peeling, and selecting cashew nuts, followed by vacuum packaging. This particular shipment marks one of the largest ever made by the Central Cashew Growers Cooperatives, and there is an ongoing new contract expected to surpass the current 25.4 tons.

Involving around 120 family farmers in cashew farming, Cocajupi plays a crucial role in receiving and processing raw materials. The export initiative is anticipated to significantly boost the income of these family farmers.

Jocibel emphasized the dual nature of the cooperative, serving both as a business and contributing to the social well-being of farmers. The Secretariat of Family Agriculture (SAF) actively supports initiatives strengthening the cashew production chain in Piauí. Secretary Rejane Tavares expressed joy over the company’s export, interpreting it as a sign of sectoral recovery post-pandemic. SAF's efforts in opening markets, facilitating commercialization, and bolstering cashew farming were highlighted, including the distribution of 400,000 cashew seedlings to enhance the production process.
