According to the IBGE Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA), based on field information obtained from the producers themselves, the cashew nut harvest in Piauí in 2024 is expected to grow by around 40%, jumping from 20.9 thousand tons produced in 2023 to around 29.4 thousand tons in 2024.
According to Pedro Andrade, Head of Agricultural Research Section of IBGE in Piauí, this expected increase in production will consolidate in the harvest in the second half of the year, if favorable weather conditions are maintained, as well as there are no occurrences of any pests. In confirming the expected production of cashew nuts, of 29.4 thousand tons, this will be the second largest production in the product's historical series since 2011, when a production of 45.7 thousand tons was reached.
It is worth highlighting that, in 2011, Piauí had around 171 thousand hectares planted with cashew and now in 2024 producers report a planted area of no more than 76 thousand hectares. According to Pedro Andrade, this reduction in the cashew planting area is due to the aging of orchards without proper replacement of seedlings.
Among the other permanent crops in Piauí, in addition to cashew, the production of bananas, whose production forecast for 2024 points to a harvest of 49.9 thousand tons, with a reduction of around 5 thousand tons (-10.17%) compared to the previous year. According to Pedro Andrade, this reduction is due to producers who had their activities in irrigated perimeters and gave up cultivation, even having to completely eradicate their planting.
As a highlight for long-lasting temporary crops in Piauí, we have cassava destined for industrialization, which has a production expectation for 2024 of around 534.8 thousand tons, with an increase in production of around 45 thousand tons (+9.24%) compared to the previous year.
