The Institute of Weights and Measures of Amapá (Ipem-AP) organized a technical guidance session for Brazilian nuts harvesters in the community of Água Branca do Cajari, situated in the Rural Zone of Laranjal do Jari, at the southern end of the state. The primary goal is to establish standardization to ensure accurate weighing of Brazilian nuts, thus preventing potential losses in sales.

Presently, Brazilian nuts are sold by volume rather than weight, and lacking specific regulations, Ipem, in response to an invitation from the Public Ministry (MP-AP), proposed an alternative to the community. The technical team from the agency delivered a presentation emphasizing the reliability of the weighing method, substantiated by the science of metrology, as explained by Donizete Furlan, the manager of the institute's Metrological Verification Center.
The collaborative effort involved the participation of the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMbio) and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), with representation from the Extractive Reserve Cooperative. Ozaniel Ribeiro, the Cooperative's president, emphasized that the initiative stemmed from numerous complaints by workers who felt disadvantaged.
A referral process is underway to facilitate further discussions and the creation of a conduct agreement aimed at standardizing nut measurements. Embrapa Amapá researcher Marcelino Guedes, who has been involved with over 500 chestnut trees in the community for nearly two decades, pointed out the adverse effects of the current variation in weight and volume on sellers.
Ipem is set to compile a report for the Public Ministry, summarizing the technical guidance presented and underscoring its potential to foster a more equitable and balanced development of extractive activities for both producers and purchasers.
