FOB (Free on Board), origin port
The seller is responsible until the goods are loaded on the vessel, including export packing, inland transport to the port and export clearance. The buyer takes over after loading: ocean freight, marine insurance, carrier choice and import clearance.
Best for buyers with strong logistics partners and volume leverage.
CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight), destination port
The seller arranges and pays ocean freight to the destination port and minimum insurance coverage. The buyer still handles import clearance, duties, port fees and local delivery.
Best for new buyers, smaller volumes, or when the buyer wants a single price to port and fewer steps.
CIF does not mean risk until arrival
Even under CIF, risk typically transfers when the goods are on board at origin. Check the insurance type, the insured value and who the beneficiary is.
